Raise your hand if you’ve picked up some succulents on your way out of IKEA. Well, I’m guilty of just randomly picking an up a few. And not paying much attention to the health of the plant. Then once I got home, I may have planted a few succulents in regular potting soil. Yes, I did, and this is most likely why my plants died. Today, I want to share with you how to not kill your succulents.
I also have this thing with overwatering my plants and then I have major bug problems. And the thing is I can go weeks without watering. Lesson learned to take note of your house, and it’s temperature. The temperature and humidity levels in your home will determine how often your plants require watering.
Since my epic days of failing fast, I’ve come up with a list of tips that will help you. I have witnessed the fruits of my labor and learned from the mistakes of my past. I promise a green thumb is achievable and you can have real living things. No need to buy faux succulents that require dusting.
How to Not Kill Your Succulents
- Tip #1 – Buy healthy plants from the beginning. Check the pot for dead leaves. Pull the plant out of the pot and take a look at the root system. Notice any rotting or bugs leave it.
- Tip #2 – Google the succulent variety and determine the amount of sun it needs. I’ve had this probably thinking my succulent could survive on a dark desk in my office.
- Tip #3 – Let your plant dry out between waterings. A plant that has too much will have translucent and squishy leaves. A plant that’s underwater will have dead foliage.
- Tip #4 – Use cacti and succulent potting soil. This type of soil is less compact and allows for proper drainage.
- Tip #5 – Invest in a plant food and determine when the growing season for your succulent.
