The Design Dash sponsored by La-Z-Boy has truly been a blessing. I got to live out every designers dream. I am a fan of major design shows where rooms are magically transformed in hours and sometimes weeks. This is the magic of TV and of course great editing. I however, came very close in the Design Competition with reality design shows. The competition really helped me flex my skills with color and textures.

I started with a vibrant and bold sofa color in Sea Glass. I then in my mind built everything around that color. I added accent pillows with a tropical/ botanical motif. I was really captured my the deep greens, bright greens and mustard yellow/greens.
3 tips for designing with color

- Pick a palette of colors and anchor the space in one or two of those colors. I often select my favorite of the colors for large anchor pieces.
- Then float accent pieces around the space to help tell the color story.
- Don’t be afraid to incorporate texture and colors in the accent throws and pillows. They can be easily changed as you adjust for seasons or to refresh a room.

The entire process of putting together a room in 4 hrs and shopping for it in around 30 mins challenged me in good ways. I realized that some of my selections were standalone great pieces but didn’t really work well together. I also grabbed a lot of lighting options and faux plants. All things that I would typically have any space I desired.

The Bexley Sofa was really the shinning star and I wanted it to stand out. The case goods were the other big items besides the Urban Attitudes sofa I designed. They were like the large credenzas, book shelves and shelving units. I being a textile lover and plant hoarder missed out on really thinking these things through. I only grabbed one credenza and not anything else.
I also didn’t grab a coffee table and a end table that worked well in my space. Also, I was lacking in the art department because of the large mantel. I was a great negotiator. Trading pieces with other designers. In the home stretch I acquired art for the mantel, a pouf, some plants and a end table. I did pretty good with the items I acquired.
