Raise your hand if you have a green thumb? No, worries nobody is actually watching you slowly raise or not put your hand up at all. I’m not that type of girl that would call you out on the plastic fake silk arrangements in every corner. Not, that it reminds me of a funeral home sitting room or anything, but it truly does. If your friends have never said anything to you about it then they don’t care about you. No, but for real you can do better with some flowering plants.
I have 3 flowering plants that will make you look like a regular old blue ribbon winner at the local county fair for best in show. I’m a palm tree kinda girl with green leaves in every corner, but ain’t nothing wrong with a few flowers inside for decor. Here is my breakdown of my favorite flowers that are indoor friendly and you can find at your local nursery. I prefer a local nursery sometimes because I find the quality to be much better.
3 flowering plants
Orchids – Some may argue that they are easy to kill, but I have some pointers that will keep them alive and so that you can enjoy the flowers much longer.
- Don’t plant them in potting soil. That’s the quickest way to kill an Orchid. Instead buy a special Orchid mix which is basically bark and stones.
- Don’t over water. Buy a pot designed for orchids this will allow the orchid to get oxygen around the roots and not get water logged.
- Don’t put near air condition vents. Orchids like to be in warm areas around 60F.
- Don’t let the leaves get a dark green. I know sounds strange, but this is a sign that the orchids are not getting enough light.
Geraniums – Are like getting a two for one special of a really good item at Target. You can use them outside and as houseplants.
- Don’t over water during the winter months. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent soggy soil and root rot.
- Dead head the blooms by removing old blooms. This will allow new blooms to appear.
- Put this plant in a window that gets a lot of sun. They want bloom without enough sunlight.
African Violets – African Violet’s are very adaptable to many types of environments which makes it a great house plant.
- Buy a self-watering pot. African Violets don’t like to be over watered.
- The smaller the pot the better they will bloom. So don’t buy the biggest pot you can find.
- You can start a new plant by removing a fresh leaf from your already established plant. It’s a plant that keeps giving and growing.
