These are my five tips for making fresh flowers last longer. I grabbed a couple of fresh cut flowers at the market when I do my grocery shopping. Typically, I just cut the bottoms add the fresh flower packet and call it a day.
Somehow my flowers never looked so good, and the water was murky. I did some research, and by trial and error, these are my five tips for making fresh flowers last longer.
- Remove the leaves and thorns that will be below water level off the stems (do this by hand)
- Use lukewarm water instead of cold water in the vase.
- Cut stems with a sharp knife or scissors.
- Don’t throw the fresh flower food away. Stir it until dissolved.
- Spray the head of flowers with cool water. I just use a small travel size spray bottle.

Got that nugget of truth from this YouTube Video
The lukewarm water helps prevent air bubbles from blocking water from traveling up the stem. Also use the fresh flower food that comes with the bouquet as this helps with nutrients and can encourage the closed buds to open and bloom, but this depends on the flower.
For example, Gerber daisies will always remain the size that they were when picked and will not continue to bloom like roses and carnations.
This spring my favorite flower has to be the Jumbo White Chrysanthemum it is simply classic and stunning alone in a vase or mixed with other flowers. What’s your favorite flower?
